The 2023 Hyundai Tucson is one of the most unique looking, well-equipped and versatile compact crossovers on the market. It’s well-loved by its owners and is one of the few models available that can be specced with three unique powertrains: there’s a gas-only version, a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version. As the compact crossover segment continues to dominate today’s automotive landscape, you can be sure that the Tucson will be right there at the front of the pack.
2023 Hyundai Tucson
When you consider that the gas-only Tucson has two engine choices, you could make the argument that the Tucson actually comes with four unique powertrains. Buyers of the gas model can choose from between a 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder good for 187 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, and a zippy 1.6L turbo four good for 180 hp and 196 lb-ft. The former gets a standard eight-speed automatic, with the latter a six-speed auto with paddle-activated manual mode.
The 2023 Hyundai Tucson comes available in seven trims, starting at $31,156: Essential, Preferred, Preferred with Trend Package, Urban, N Line, Luxury and Ultimate with the top two trims coming standard with the 1.6L turbo. Standard features include aluminum wheels, LED headlights and daytime running lights, front-wheel-drive with all-wheel-drive as an option, 60/40 split folding rear seats, heated front seats, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, forward collision assist, lane keep assist and tire pressure monitoring system.
2023 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid
Power-wise, the Hybrid model makes more power and torque than either gas engine as it gets a turbocharger and boost from an electric motor for a total of 226 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. However, with the Hybrid (available in two trims, starting at $42,756: Luxury AWD and Ultimate AWD) that power gets sent to all four wheels as standard. While the Hybrid makes more power, the system itself doesn’t infringe on cargo space as it gets the same 1,096 litres of cargo space behind the second row that the standard Tucson does.
Since the Hybrid starts life as a Luxury trim, it gets more features as standard: heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, blind spot monitor, adaptive cruise control and navigation are just a few of the bonus items you get when upgrading to the Tucson Hybrid. Fuel economy, meanwhile, is rated at 6.4L/100 km in the combined cycle.
2023 Hyundai Tucson PHEV
The PHEV version makes the same torque as the Hybrid but gets a horsepower boost to 261 hp, which is always a bonus. The bigger bonus, however comes in terms of fuel savings because since the PHEV gets a larger battery, it can cruise for up to 53 kilometers on electric power alone. That means that if your daily commute is a short one that has you spending most of your time in the city and you can plug in at night, you can be in EV mode pretty much all the time, never using a drop of gas.
Like the Hybrid, the PHEV starts with AWD in Luxury trim and gets the bonus standard features those trims provide.
All Tucsons, meanwhile, get the aggressive front fascia, flared fenders and athletic stance that sets them apart form their rivals. Come pay us a visit to find out which Tucson is right for you.
